LLPS Founding Father James Radcliff Maumenee Passes Feb 4, 2013

James Radcliff Maumenee, age 97, passed away on Feb. 2, 2013.

Rad was born June 27, 1915 in Mobile. He was a life long resident who left for military service during World War Two. Rad was married in 1947 to Lucy Campbell who preceded him in death in 1986. Rad married Douglas Hempstead Jones in 1988. A graduate of the University of Alabama Law School in 1939. He practiced law in Birmingham for a short time, then moved to Washington D.C., and worked as an attorney for the U.S. Justice Department, followed by a job as an Assistant to the Commissioner in the Federal Communications Division. He served five and one half years as a Pilot in the Army Air Corp during World War Two and then returned to Mobile. Following his military service he worked for Alabama Drydock & Shipbuilding Company, serving as President from 1963 to 1982. He was preceded by his parents, Dr. Alfred Edward Maumenee, Lulie Radcliff Maumenee; his brother, Dr. Alfred Edward Maumenee Jr., his wife of twenty five years, Lucy Campbell Maumenee and his wife of twenty five years, Douglas Jones Maumenee. He is survived by his sons, James R. Maumenee Jr., Benjamin Campbell Maumenee; daughter, Cammie Maumenee; step- children, Harvey E. Jones Jr., Ellen Douglas Gillory (Michael), and Carolyn Hempsted Walthall(Julian); grandchildren, Dianne Maumenee Hoffmann, Kelly D. Maumenee, Evangeline K. Maumenee, Lulie Maumenee Dimauro, Lydia D. Maumenee; three great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Visitation and Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013 at Saint James Episcopal Church 860 N. Section Street in Fairhope, in lieu of flowers the family suggest that memorials be made to the Little Lagoon Preservation Society, P. O. Box 3193, Gulf Shores, Alabama 36547 

Rad relished the Little Lagoon from sunrise to sunset.  He loved to swim, fish, shrimp, catch crabs, pull the gill net, flounder, water ski, sail, and more.  He instilled that same love in his children, especially his daughter, Cammie.  She presently lives on Little Lagoon, carrying foward and enjoying her fathers legacy.
